On July 23, 2024, Special Envoy Zhai Jun of the Chinese Government on the Middle East Issue had a phone call with EU Special Representative for the Middle East Peace Process Sven Koopmans at the latter's request.
Koopmans extended congratulations on and appreciated China's successful mediation of 14 Palestinian factions to hold reconciliation talks in China and sign the Beijing Declaration on Ending Division and Strengthening Palestinian National Unity, stressing that this is a remarkable achievement and fully demonstrates China's positive and constructive role in promoting intra-Palestinian reconciliation, the ceasefire and end of the conflict in Gaza and the Middle East peace process. The EU looks forward to further strengthening communication and coordination with China, jointly pushing for a ceasefire and end of the conflict in Gaza, and promoting the settlement of the Palestinian question on the basis of the "two-State solution".
Zhai Jun briefed Koopmans on the reconciliation talks of Palestinian factions in Beijing upon request, saying that this was the first time that 14 Palestinian factions gathered in Beijing for the reconciliation talks, which brought precious hope to the suffering Palestinian people. In his closing remarks, Foreign Minister Wang Yi put forward China's three-step initiative to help get out of the current conflict and predicament in Gaza. China sincerely hopes that Palestinian factions will achieve reconciliation and, on that basis, realize national unity and independent statehood at an early date. Both China and the EU bear important responsibilities in safeguarding regional peace and stability. China will continue to maintain communication and coordination with the EU to jointly push for a ceasefire and end of the conflict in Gaza and achieve a comprehensive, just and lasting settlement of the Palestinian question.
